e-Learning and Changing Role Of Students As Contributors to Learning.

I think inviting students to enrich and expand their learning through technology will provide a motivation so necessary for the 21st century learners. The emerging role of students as contributors provides student centered learning approach which allows students to have power over their learning and according to Clifford, (2012), having authority for their own learning is best as students become more responsible to their learning while teachers become facilitators of learning rather than direct source of learning. I agree with Allan November, that we have to prepare our students for 21st century work environment and by giving them authority in the classroom; we are providing them with the platform to enhance 21st century skills of creating, communicating, contributing and collaborating.

Most importantly, technology –enhanced learning (e-learning) extends the learning opportunity beyond the classroom and allows seamless learning opportunities that bridge the formal learning in schools with the informal learning outside of classroom and school, (Alberta Education, 2012) and allows accessibility of the learning activities anytime, anywhere . However, it exposes students to the online world and provides opportunities for students to be part of the participatory digital culture. There are many pitfalls awaiting students entering the online world and that students need to learn not only to keep themselves safe but to behave ethically as well.

It is the responsibility of the educator not only to facilitate student learning but also develop digital literacy and citizenship in students that will prepare them for the changing world of technology in which is their future.

By bringing technology into the classroom, it is bridging a gap between a child’s home and school life.

I 100% agree! This is a necessity if we want students to be able to thrive beyond school.

I wonder if students would view technology as an opportunity to expand and enrich their learning, or whether they would have an expectation that use of technology is the norm in terms of their day to day and should therefore be integral to their education? As digital natives these kids already live so many 21st century skills that educators could provide a platform to develop and refine. The responsibility you highlight of the educator is a challenge, one that needs to be taken with the knowledge that technology can never replace a great teacher!

Thanks for your comment. I believe that a Great Teacher will foresee this perception of students and include pedagogies that will ensure that incorporation of technologies in learning is seen as an opportunity to expand and enrich learning. It should provide a platform for students to enhance 21st century skills to thrive beyond school, as commented by Emily.

I agree with you that there has been a shift to a more student centered learning focus; this empowers the students by placing the learning tasks in their hands while the teachers are (as you mentioned) more facilitators. It is important for the teacher to be a supportive figure in the classroom where the students can still get help if they need it. The most important part of any classroom is that all students feel safe and included in the learning process; they have to feel like they are capable of participating in learning. I believe that it is the role of the teacher to prepare students to succeed in the world outside the classroom, this includes technology.

Technology is a major part of society and therefore needs to be implemented into our teaching. I like you point that technology has allowed learning to be accessed anywhere, anytime. This expands the number of teaching opportunities and increases the number of ways you can connect with the students by changing how you present the information.

Thanks for your insights, you make really good points.
Good luck with the rest of your subjects and your teaching career.
